Melissa's Dream Cake

The baker that I think I am, I was all about this cake...
Isn't this the most amazingly bizarre, yet incredibly fantastic cake you've ever seen?  Beautiful.  She's edible from head to toe! When David was in search of a baker to make Melissa's birthday cake, I couldn't think of anyone else but Courtney, pastry artist extraordinaire.  Melissa collects antique, neglected-looking dolls; you can't miss them in her home.  So you can just imagine that this was a dream cake come true for her.  The cake turned so many heads at the party and in the streets.  There were many memorable looks and wonderful comments, all compliments to the pastry chef.  (The last one was in the parking garage elevator walking after the party.  This guy was very preoccupied, talking on his cell phone, next thing you know he says, "What the--- I gotta go, call you back!" LOL! He was mesmerized.)  Cake Noveau will be flooded with more customers, no doubt. Oh, this cake was not only beautifully made, but it was oh so delicious.  It's creme brulee! Melissa's favorite dessert.  (David really thought of every detail.)  I don't know how Courtney does it, she even captured the creme brulee's hard sugar crunch in the layers of frosting. Yummy. Genius.

Melissa is one of the nicest, kindest, loveliest ladies in our life and today is her 50th Birthday!  What's her fountain of youth? She is all about keeping your inner child alive.  I adore that about her.  This past Friday, we celebrated her big day with a surprise dinner party (Big thanks to David).  Boy, was she surprised!!!  Surrounded by her Michigan family and friends, the night was filled with smiles, laughter, and joy.   Happy Birthday Mel!

We are blessed to have you both and Marcella in our lives and honored to have celebrated your birthdays with you.  Yes, it was David's birthday too, this past Sunday.  It was one of the best weekend celebrations ever!

Chocolate Cheesecake

Ooh la la!
Impressive isn't it?  I just got home from work and was greeted by this thick, mouthwatering, cheesy, chocolaty treat!  No, this is not a mistake to label this post under "The Mister". Yes, he baked it with the help of baker and instructor Dennis Conn.  Thank you, thank you Dennis!  I can now count on my man to make me this delightful dessert when I crave it.  I think dinner will be early tonight 'cause I can't wait for dessert!  Oh and don't worry, I'll share-- really I will (smile).
Bob, you're the best!

Antiquing in Autumn

I caught the last hours of the Ann Arbor Antiques Market before it closed for season.  It's a place visited by both dealers and collectors nationwide, Rachel Ashwell included.  I took home only one item, an old hula instructional magazine (a gift for my hula teacher).  The thing I really wanted went home with another admirer, a set of old white wooden candlestick holders.  Lesson of the day: When you find something you really like and can afford, don't think twice about buying.  I made the mistake of turning away the first time and was too late when I returned the second time...  The dealer was a sweet old man who even gave me a little hope by letting me know to hang around for a few minutes in the event the lady who went to get cash for her purchase fail to return.  No such luck of course.  Him and I both shared a disappointing grin as I bid him "goodbye and see you in the spring"!

So I wanted to share this because it gave me a chance to introduce a couple of things: The Victoria magazine adored by Jean and myself since I can remember.  It features antiquing in Montreal and Quebec City.  Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic and her new Prairie Collection.  These pieces are similar items often found at the Ann Arbor Antiques Market.

Hope you too will head out there in the chill of autumn even for just a few hours to go antiquing in search of a little treasure for your home.  Just keep in mind my lesson learned. (wink)

Shelob

From ghoulies and ghosties
And long-leggedy beasties
And things that go bump in the night...

Okay, I'm a bit proud of the way I decorated our chandelier in preparation for halloween.
How do you like the spooky spider and ravens?

Fall Leaves

Every leaf speaks bliss to me,
fluttering from the autumn tree.
Emily Bronte

Our maple tree in all its splendor!
I'm loving today.  The wind blew and the first thick layer of leaves now cover the ground.  Although I have a cold in this unseasonably warm weather, I was anxious to rake the leaves.
There are times when I dread raking leaves, but when the weather is beautiful and the air stands still, this can be a wonderful activity.  Thankfully fall leaves no longer require bagging.  Instead they are gathered, collected, and composted as part of our city service.  Gotta love Green Living!

Our Wedding Album

In celebration of our 6th year wedding anniversary...
Your love, O God, has called us here,
for all love finds its source in you,
the perfect love that casts out fear,
the love that Christ makes ever new.
O gracious God, you consecrate
all that is lovely, good, and true.
Bless us who is in your presence wait,
our trust in your desires renew.
Your love will send us from this place;
reveal your will in all we do,
that every path of love we trace
may show the world its source in you.
